ELO is a method for calculating the relative skill of players. Originally developed for chess, it's now used in tennis, football and many competitive sports. Every player starts at 1500.
When you win, you gain points. When you lose, you lose points. The key is how much — beating a stronger player earns you more than beating a weaker one.
We use a K-factor of 24, meaning the maximum points you can gain or lose in a single game is 24.
Only league fixtures count towards your ELO rating. Casual games, practice and friendly matches do not affect your rating — so there's no pressure in a friendly knock-up.
Until you've played 10 rated games, your rating is marked as provisional. This means it moves more freely while the system learns your true skill level.

Yes — downloading and using Bowls Score Pro for casual scoring, practice and friendly games is completely free with no adverts interrupting your game. Club league features and ELO ratings are included free during our early access period while we grow the player base.
No. For casual and practice games you don't need an account at all — just open the app and start scoring. An account is only needed if you want to join a club, play in league fixtures and track your ELO rating.
Bowls Score Pro supports Singles, Pairs, Triples and Practice mode. For each mode you can choose Fixed Ends (play a set number of ends), To Points (first to reach a target score), Sets (best of sets) or Free Play (no limit — just keep scoring). All standard bowls formats are covered.
Download the app, create a free account and tap "Clubs & Leagues" then "Create Club". Enter your club name and location and you're done. Players can then search for your club and join. As the club owner you can promote members to admin or captain roles to help manage things.
Once you've created a league and added teams, tap "Generate Fixtures" and the app automatically creates a full double round-robin schedule. You can also add or remove individual fixtures manually. After each game, an admin or captain enters the score and the standings table updates automatically.
Your ELO rating is tied to your account, so if you play for multiple clubs your rating reflects all your league results across all of them. Each club also has its own internal leaderboard so you can see how you rank within your specific club.
